As I prepare to release Well-Seasoned, I’ve been reflecting on this journey.
I’ve been writing poetry and songs since I was in high school. Over the years, I’ve written four books of poetry, and two remain in print: Promise of a Rainbow and In a Heartbeat. Long before this album, writing was already my way of telling stories and preserving memories.
Every lyric on Well-Seasoned came from my heart, my life, and my pen. I wrote and produced every song because I believe our stories deserve to be told.
I’ve also never been afraid to embrace new tools and new ways of creating. Earning my Master’s degree in Digital Media only strengthened what I’ve always believed: technology should help us share our gifts, not hide them.
At the end of the day, tools may evolve, but the storyteller remains the same.
Frederick Douglass said it beautifully:
“Poets, prophets, and reformers are all picture-makers, and this ability is the secret of their power and achievements. They see what ought to be by the reflection of what is, and endeavor to remove the contradiction.” ~ Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass was not simply talking about poets. He was delivering a lecture titled Pictures and Progress in 1861, at a time when photography was a revolutionary new technology. Rather than fearing the new medium, Douglass embraced it. He believed that pictures, poetry, music, and storytelling all have the power to shape how people think and inspire progress. His words remind us that while tools may evolve, the creator’s vision remains at the heart of every meaningful work. That truth resonates with me as I release Well-Seasoned.
