What's New - October 2008
On Friday, October 25th, Oprah announced that her "new favorite thing" is the Amazon.com Kindle, undoubtedly sending the Kindle sales through the roof, lol! The Kindle is an electronic book reader. What makes the Kindle different from your average e-book reader is the ability to work standalone, without the need for a computer via its "Whispernet." The Kindle Store is accessed through Whispernet, over Sprint's EVDO network, which Amazon provides free of charge. New releases and New York Times bestsellers are offered for approximately $10.
I have to admit, I had been sitting on the fence trying to decide it I wanted to shell out the $359.00 for another gadget, this along with the rumors that there would be a new model coming out this winter. However, after Oprah's endorsement along with the $50.00 discount (code: OPRAHWINFREY), I decided to give it a try and ordered one.
I realize that e-books are the way of the future, especially since everyone is "green" conscience these days. But just like audio books, I am sure they will take some getting use to. Actually, I LOVE audio books now, and I am sure I will come to love my new Kindle as well.
If you decide to buy one, make sure you use Oprah's discount code. In addition, they are offering an additional 10% off of Oprah's current book club selection, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
by David Wroblewski.
