3. In an early conversation, Jasmine tells Donavin that she trusts him. However, her subsequent actions and words show a marked level of mistrust. Did she really trust Donavin?
4. Donavin and is friends share a brotherly bond. How does Donavin differ from Spoon and J.R.? How is he the same?
5. Jasmine bumped heads with Stacia at various points throughout the novel, but they still remained friends. Do you have friends that sometimes feel like enemies? If so, how do you deal with them, and do you feel that Jasmine dealt with Stacia realistically?
6. That's the Way Love Goes is partially set on the campus of a fictional historically Black university. Was the setting a realistic portrayal of Black college life?
7. This novel confronts the events of September 11th when Jasmine is potentially in harm's way. How did the events of that day affect the characters?
8. Donavin had a very close relationship with his mother. Do you think that Donavin's parents should have kept his mother's illness a secret from him for as long as they did? Would Donavin have dealt with his mother's passing better if his father had allowed him to travel home upon hearing the news of her illness as opposed to at Thanksgiving when he only got to share her last moments?
