Topics to Consider

Discuss the sister (“sistah”) relationship that exists between Misty and Reesy.  What is it about their connection that makes them sistahs?  Have you ever experienced a relationship like this one? What effect did it have on your life?

Reesy and her parents have a complex relationship.  How does it compare to Misty’s relationship with her parents?  In what ways do you think parents impact life choicescareer paths, attitudes about men and relationships, and personal drive/motivation?

Why is Reesy attracted to the field of exotic dancing and what is Misty’s reaction?  How does this illuminate the power that close friends have over one another?  Why do the choices our close friends make affect our own?

Misty and Reesy have very different attitudes about men and relationships.  What is the cause of these differing styles?  Do their opinions change through the course of the novel?  In what ways have your friends shaped your view of relationships?

These sistahs complement one another on a friendship level.  How and why does this fail to translate into a living and working relationship?  What are the difficulties in maintaining an intimate friendship with a boss?  How does the balance of friendship shift when one friend supervises another?

How does the fact that Misty and Reesy are two black women struggling for identity and success in a white-dominated business world impact this story?

In many respects, women struggling in their relationships with one another, with careers, and with the men in their lives crosses all lines of ethnicity.  What elements make this novel uniquely about black women and “sistah-hood”?
